Why Do You Need to Clean Your Carpets?

Clients usually call for carpet cleaning for the sake of their appearance for an upcoming party or for visitors. However, did you know that carpet cleaning should also be done for health reasons?

Your carpets do so much more than just add to your décor; they also act as a filter for your home. The fibers filter out the dirt, dust, pollen, and outdoor pollutants in the air, making them air cleaners in your home. If you don’t have your carpets cleaned regularly, then, as with any filter, they can become clogged

Dust MiteA carpet full of dirt, pollutants, and dust (which is mostly made up of human skin cells, pollen, and bacteria) becomes a breeding ground for dust mites. In the average home, over two million mites hide in carpets, upholstery, drapes, mattresses, and pillows. So small, they can’t be seen with the naked eye, a gram of dust contains as many as 1,000 dust mites and 250,000 allergenic dust mite fecal pellets. Only when the mite is dead can it be vacuumed away effectively. Think of how many mites are living in your carpets at this moment.

  • Each female mite can increase the population by 25 to 30 mites every three weeks.
  • Each mite produces 10 to 20 waste pellets each day.
  • During its 80-day lifespan, each mite produces approx 1,000 allergenic waste particles.
  • With at least 10% of the population and approximately 80% of allergy sufferers being allergic to proteins found in the their waste products and in decomposed dust mites, it’s surprising that many more people don’t know how to combat them.
  • Use of a high powered hepa filter vacuum will trap the mites.
  • Professional extraction steam cleaning is recommended, as the heat and cleaning agents help to kill mites and their eggs, interrupting the dust mite reproduction cycle.
  • So, don’t just clean for appearance sake, clean for the sake of your health!

Cleaning Methods

Area rugHOT WATER EXTRACTION:
The cleaning methods we use are industry and manufacturer recommended methods.
The most frequently used method of carpet cleaning that we use is the Hot Water Extraction Method. This method uses detergent, steam, pressure, and extraction techniques to remove soil left in carpets that vacuuming alone cannot remove. This type of carpet cleaning provides the deepest cleaning and is, therefore, the recommended method for most carpets, especially those with high traffic areas. For synthetic carpets, this process usually takes 6-8 hours to dry, and 24 hours for natural fiber carpets. This method is recommended by Mohawk, Shaw Industries, and the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute), the largest manufactures of carpet and carpet care industries in the USA.

COLD WATER EXTRACTION:
This method of carpet cleaning uses detergent, cold water, lighter pressure, and extraction techniques to remove the remaining soil left in the carpet or rug that vacuuming alone cannot remove. This type of cleaning works best for oriental rugs, silk rugs, and other textiles that are not as durable as synthetic fibers. Cold water extraction reduces the amount of color fading, running, and shrinking in carpets.

Substances that remain after performing two cleaning services are considered stains or damage. The remediation of stains or damage could require additional techniques that would be considered restoration techniques. The best way to prevent stains and damage is to properly take care of your carpets at home, schedule regular professional maintenance cleaning, and schedule the application of carpet protectant products.

What is Carpet Protectant and Why do You Need it?

Carpets are treated for stain resistance when they are manufactured. Over time, the protectants wear off, leaving your carpet exposed to the evils of soil, stains, and dirt. Carpet protectants should be reapplied after cleaning to seal any scratches in the carpet fiber, help prevent dulling, and provide protection from stains. Since the biggest enemy of protectants is abrasion from traffic and, since traffic varies with each situation, protectants should be reapplied after each cleaning.

Check your carpet warranty: many carpet manufacturers not only require professional carpet cleaning every 12-18 months to keep the warranty active, they may also recommend the reapplication of carpet protectants.

Hiring a Professional

Find a professional cleaning company in your area at the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certifications (IICRC) at www.certifiedcleaners.org or 800-835-4624.

VacuumHere are a few tips:

  • Be wary of companies that advertise prices by room. Sizes vary, and charges should be based on total area cleaned.
  • Be wary of companies that advertise very low prices. They often charge another price when they arrive, citing small print. This is known as bait and switch.
  • The use of brand name products doesn’t suggest an affiliation with those brands or add credibility. Select a company holding certifications from an organization that certifies cleaning professionals.
